OUR STORY

I did not buy a tyre shop. I grew up in one.

I started working at Te Rapa Tyre Centre 22 years ago, when I was just 16, under the previous owner, Ashley Bird. I learned the tyre industry from the ground up, beginning with the practical, hands-on work and gradually taking on more responsibility as my experience grew. Over the years, I worked on everything from everyday passenger vehicles through to trucks, tractors, forklifts and large earthmoving equipment, learning not only how to fit and repair tyres, but how to solve problems, look after customers and keep a busy tyre shop operating.

My role eventually grew far beyond the workshop. At the time, Te Rapa Tyre Centre was still largely paper-based, including its invoicing and office systems, so I helped set up and develop the office side of the business and move many of those processes into a more modern and organised system. That gave me a much wider understanding of how the entire business worked, from serving customers and completing jobs through to invoicing, accounts, stock, suppliers and the day-to-day decisions required to keep everything running.

When Ashley decided he wanted to retire, I was given the opportunity to take over the business in 2023. It felt like the natural next step after dedicating most of my working life to learning and helping operate it. Taking ownership was not about starting something completely new. It was about continuing the legacy of a trusted local business while putting my own values and vision into its future.

My biggest motivation is to create a tyre shop that people can genuinely trust.

Tyres are a major part of vehicle safety, but many customers are unsure what they need or whether the advice they are receiving is honest. I believe in explaining the options clearly and recommending what is right for the customer's vehicle, driving needs and budget, not simply trying to sell the most expensive tyre. Sometimes the right solution is a new set of tyres, but other times it may be a repair, a rotation, a wheel alignment or simply reassuring the customer that their existing tyres are still safe.
