Tyre pressure warning light on and will not go off? We find out why, then service, replace or reset the sensors so the light goes off and stays off.
Tyre pressure warning light on and will not go off? We find out why, then service, replace or reset the sensors so the light goes off and stays off.
Why is the light on?
TPMS stands for tyre pressure monitoring system. A small sensor inside each wheel reports the pressure to the car. When the light comes on, it is one of these.
A tyre is actually low
The most common reason, and the one to check first. A slow puncture often shows up here before you can see it.
A cold morning
Pressure drops as the temperature drops. If the light comes on first thing and goes off once you have driven, the tyres are sitting just under.
A sensor battery has died
The battery is sealed inside the sensor and cannot be changed on its own. When it runs out, the sensor gets replaced.
A sensor was damaged
Sensors sit on the valve inside the rim, where a careless tyre change or a hard knock can break them.
New wheels or a rotation
On some vehicles the car has to relearn which sensor is on which corner after the wheels are moved or changed.
A fault in the system
Less common, but it happens. We read the system to find out which sensor is not talking, rather than guessing.

what we do
A light that keeps coming back usually means someone reset it without fixing the reason it came on. We check the pressures, check the tyre, read the sensors and only then tell you what it needs. If it is just low pressure, that is all you pay for.
Diagnosis of the warning light
Sensor service kits on fitting
Faulty sensor replacement
Reset and relearn to your vehicle
Pressures set to spec on all four

Alignment questions
Check your pressures first. If a tyre is low, top it up and keep an eye on it, because it may be a slow puncture. If the pressures are all fine and the light stays on, it is likely a sensor, and it is worth getting looked at so you have the warning when you actually need it.
On most cars, a light that flashes when you start the car and then stays on points to a fault in the system, often a sensor, rather than low pressure. A light that comes on and stays solid usually means a tyre is low. Your owner's manual will confirm how your car does it.
Not usually. Sensors last several tyre changes. We service them while the tyre is off and only recommend a replacement if one has failed or is damaged.
If there is a tyre pressure warning symbol on your dash when you start the car, it does. Most newer cars have it, and so do a lot of imports. If you are not sure, tell us the make, model and year and we will check.
Call us with your make, model and year. We will tell you whether we have one on the shelf or how long it takes to get in.
We can reset it, but if there is a real reason it came on, it will be back. We would rather fix the cause once than have you back next week.
