What vulcanising is?

New rubber, bonded in for good

A patch sits on the tyre. A vulcanised repair becomes part of it. Here is what actually happens to the casing.

We look before we quote

The damage is checked inside and out, so you know whether it is worth repairing before you spend a dollar on it.

Damage cleaned back

Loose and damaged rubber is cut and buffed away until there is clean, sound rubber all round the repair area.

New rubber, heat and pressure

New raw rubber is built into the damage, then heated and bonded so it cures into one piece with the rest of the tyre.

why vulcanising

Big tyres cost big money. A lot of them are repairable.

A standard patch is made for a nail in a car tyre. It will not hold on a heavy casing with a cut or a gouge in it. Vulcanising will, and on a truck, tractor or earthmover tyre with plenty of tread left it costs a fraction of a new one. If the casing is past saving, we will tell you that too.

  • Damage assessed before you are quoted

  • New rubber bonded in under heat

  • A permanent repair, not a get-you-home fix

  • Told straight if the casing is not worth it

What we vulcanise?

The tyres worth saving

The bigger and dearer the tyre, the more a repair makes sense.

Truck casings

Cuts and tread damage on truck and light commercial tyres, so the vehicle is back on the road without buying a new tyre it did not need.

Trailers

Work trailers, stock trailers and farm trailers. Tyres that cop kerbs, rocks and rough tracks every day.

Tractors

Rear tractor tyres are some of the most expensive on the farm. Stubble, wire and stakes damage plenty that can be repaired.

Loaders

Front-end loaders and telehandlers working on hard, sharp ground, where cuts are part of the job.

Earthmoving

Diggers, dozers and earthmoving gear. Big casings where a repair can save thousands and get the machine working again.

Quarry gear

Rock cuts and gouges on quarry tyres, repaired where the damage is within what the casing can safely take.

Vulcanising questions

The things people ask

What is a vulcanised repair?

Vulcanising is a repair process in which we add new raw rubber to the damaged area of a tyre, then heat and bond it to create a strong, long-lasting repair.

How is it different from a puncture repair?

A puncture repair seals a small hole, usually from a nail or screw in a car tyre. Vulcanising rebuilds a larger area of damage with new rubber that is cured into the casing. It is the repair for heavier tyres and bigger damage, where a standard patch will not hold.

Is a vulcanised repair permanent?

Yes. Done within what the casing can safely take, the new rubber cures into the tyre and lasts the life of it. It is not a temporary fix to get you home.

Can sidewall damage be vulcanised?

On a car tyre, no. On truck, tractor and earthmoving casings, some sidewall damage can be repaired, depending on how big it is and where it sits. We look at it before we say yes.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the damage and the size of the tyre. Once we have seen it we will give you an honest time rather than a hopeful one, so you can plan around the downtime.

Is it worth repairing, or should I just replace it?

On a big, expensive tyre with good tread left, a repair is usually the better value. On a worn or perished casing, it usually is not. We will give you both options and the price of each, and let you decide.
